Introduction to the Salute Spotlight Series

The Salute Spotlight Series is designed to highlight the invaluable contributions of our team members and showcase their skills, experiences, and unique perspectives. Each feature focuses on insights into our leadership team’s professional journey and their impact on Salute’s collective success. This edition focuses on John Rutherfurd, Director of Sales, EMEA, whose deep industry expertise and strategic approach have been instrumental to Salute’s growth and customer success.

Can you provide a summary of your background in the data center industry?

Technology has fascinated me from an early age. As a child, a pivotal moment came when I was nine years old and had the opportunity to visit an IBM data center – an experience that sparked a lifelong passion for electrical engineering. After that experience, I would spend countless hours experimenting with electricity and electronics, always eager to find out how things worked. That curiosity eventually guided me toward the data center industry, which I joined in 2000 as InterXion’s (now Digital Realty’s) third UK employee.

What role does your team play in shaping Salute’s message to future customers?

When the data center industry was in its infancy, few businesses understood the value of colocation, relying instead on in-house server rooms. Anyone who’s ever seen a picture of a 1970s IBM data center room will be keenly aware of how dramatically the industry has evolved since then, with cloud computing and hyperscale facilities now central to business strategy. Throughout my nearly three-decade business-technical career, particularly during my tenure at Equinix, I’ve had the privilege of helping organizations navigate this transformation.

How do you approach the challenge of adapting to evolving customer demands?

At Salute, I’ve constantly sought to apply what I’ve learned to apply our knowledge and expertise to the evolving needs of our customers, ensuring they have the right solutions to support their growth. In doing so, I always seek to understand in depth, the complexities our customers are facing in trying to align their technology with their business objectives. Salute’s end-to-end data center services—advise, design, build, operate, refresh—are tailored to address these challenges, ensuring efficiency, resilience, and long-term success.

What sets Salute apart in ensuring long-term success?

What really sets Salute apart is the depth of expertise within our team. I feel we have come as far as we have in the twelve years we’ve been operating because the decades of experience our team brings to the table, enabling us to develop a unique all-encompassing approach. By strategically anticipating customer challenges, clearly articulating our value proposition, and executing innovative, forward-thinking solutions, we empower our clients to scale confidently.

What role does relationship-building play in ensuring long-term success for Salute’s customers?

In the data center industry, a single point of failure can have significant consequences, a principle that applies as much to customer relationships as it does to infrastructure. A one-to-one connection between a customer and supplier can be delicate—if that connection is severed, the entire relationship is jeopardized. That’s why I consistently focus on developing a multi-threaded engagement model, where multiple members of the Salute team interact with key stakeholders on the customer side to create more resilient client partnerships. By doing so, I try to ensure alignment between customer goals and our service offerings through continually refined solutions, ensuring Salute remains a valued partner as customer needs evolve.

What trends are you seeing in the data center sector, and how is Salute addressing them?

Artificial Intelligence is driving unprecedented demand for high-performance computing infrastructure. Companies worldwide are investing heavily in data center expansions to support AI workloads, which require immense power and cooling capacity, a shift reshaping the industry and accelerating innovation in data center design and operations. Salute supports this growth by helping clients optimize existing facilities, improve efficiency, and develop scalable solutions to accommodate evolving compute requirements.

What challenges do data centers face in preparing for AI-driven demand, and how is Salute addressing them?

As AI adoption accelerates, data centers must overcome two critical challenges: increasing energy consumption and a growing talent shortage. AI workloads require immense power and cooling capacity, which should drive all operators to explore alternative energy sources, including renewables and emerging technologies like micro-nuclear reactors. Salute is at the forefront of this movement, advising clients on best practices to improve energy efficiency and reduce their footprint. In line with that goal, field experts continually seek to refine Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and implement cost-effective sustainability measures, ensuring data centers can scale to meet AI-driven demand while not paying through the nose to wreak environmental havoc.

The rapid growth of AI infrastructure has also intensified the demand for skilled professionals, outpacing traditional recruitment pipelines. To address this, we have doubled our talent acquisition efforts and expanded our veteran recruitment programs, leveraging their discipline and adaptability to create mission-ready data center technicians. At the same time, as AI-driven automation reshapes industry needs, upskilling and reskilling existing team members is more essential than ever. To address both challenges, we’re constantly integrating emerging skills like cloud infrastructure management, cybersecurity, and data analytics into our training programs, ensuring a steady talent pipeline and equipping our workforce to meet constantly evolving demands.

What critical competencies should future leaders in the industry develop?

Given how rapidly the data center industry is transforming – something driven by the previously mentioned AI advancements as well as regulatory changes and shifting market dynamics – leaders must naturally not only anticipate these shifts but also develop long-term strategies to address them. With that in mind, understanding technological trends and business implications is naturally critical to navigating this landscape.

Equally important is the ability to lead change through complex transitions. Future leaders must recognize the strategic foresight required to ensure the smooth adoption of new technologies and processes. Likewise, an ability to navigate change also requires a robust approach to risk management—amid increasing cyber threats and supply chain disruptions, leaders must be equipped to mitigate risks and maintain operational resilience in a highly dynamic environment.

What is your vision for the Salute EMEA region?

My vision for the EMEA region is to drive profitable, scalable growth through alignment with the region’s fast-changing and diverse market demands, all while delivering consistently high execution standards. Success here will rely on deepening customer alignment, ensuring our teams are agile and well-equipped to support the region’s specific evolving needs, particularly as AI and automation reshape expectations. This makes accelerating talent development, tightening supply chain operations, and instilling cost discipline efforts more critical than ever to delivering efficient, margin-focused outcomes without compromising service quality, ensuring Salute becomes the region’s most trusted, high-value partner of choice.
